What to Do in Livigno in September: 7 Ideas

September is the month for people who come to Livigno looking for calm. Families have gone home, the trails empty out and the air is clear. Some things close in mid-month, but plenty stays open. Here is what to do in Livigno in September and what to know before you go.
1. Head up high before the lifts close
The Carosello 3000 and Mottolino summer lifts usually stay open until mid-September. The dates change every year, so check them on Livigno's official website before you leave. In the first days of the month you can still ride up to the panoramic trails without effort, or ride down the 14 trails of the Mottolino Bike Park, with far shorter queues than in August.
2. Alpenfest: the cows come home from the pastures
At the end of September Livigno celebrates the transhumance with the Alpenfest. The herds come down from the high pastures and parade through the village with the farmers. The festival lasts a weekend: Saturday in Livigno, Sunday in Trepalle, and entry is free. In 2026 it was held on 26 and 27 September; the date shifts slightly every year.
3. Hiking without the crowds
September is one of the best months for walking. For an easy stroll there is the Sentiero dell'Acqua, which starts from Lake Livigno; for something harder, Val Federia climbs towards small high-altitude alpine lakes. The days are still fairly long, but it gets dark earlier than in summer: set off early for long hikes.
4. By bike and e-bike
The valley-floor routes and the ride around the lake stay open after the lifts close. With an e-bike you can climb into the side valleys without effort. At Ironwood Livigno you can ask for e-bike hire together with your stay.
5. Larches turning gold
Towards the end of September the larch woods start turning yellow and orange, and the show continues into October. With the lower autumn light, it is the best time for landscape photos.
6. Duty-free shopping without queues
Livigno is outside the customs territory: spirits, perfume and cosmetics cost less. In September the pedestrian centre is much quieter than in August. For what's worth buying, see our duty-free shopping guide.
7. The Stelvio Pass
By car, motorbike or road bike, September is a good month for Alpine passes. You reach the Stelvio Pass via Bormio, and it usually stays open until late October or early November, unless it snows. Check that the road is open before you set off.
What if it rains?
The MUS! Museum of Livigno and Trepalle, the Livigno dairy with its audio-guided tour and Aquagranda Active You, with pools and saunas, are three good ideas. You'll find more in our guide to what to see in Livigno. Or stay in: the apartment has its own private infrared sauna and steam bath.
What to pack
Livigno is at almost 1,800 metres. In September sunny days are pleasant, but mornings and evenings are cold and there can be some snow up high. Bring layers, a warm jacket and hiking shoes.
