Carosello 3000 vs Mottolino: Which Ski Area to Choose in Livigno
Livigno doesn't have just one ski area, but two: Carosello 3000 and Mottolino Fun Mountain, which together offer around 115 km of slopes across the two sides of the basin. They're linked by the same town but have different characters, and understanding the differences helps you plan your ski week better.
Carosello 3000: the side best suited to beginners
Carosello 3000 is the larger, sunnier side, with a good share of wide, well-groomed blue runs. It's generally the side chosen by families travelling with children or those new to skiing, helped by a slightly calmer atmosphere than the opposite side.
Mottolino: sport, snowpark and a livelier pace
Mottolino Fun Mountain is more geared toward freeride skiing, with one of the best-known snowparks in Italy and a generally sportier crowd. In summer, the same area becomes the Mottolino Bike Park, one of the top mountain biking destinations in Europe — a useful detail if you're also considering Livigno outside the ski season.
One ski pass for both areas
You don't have to choose once and for all: Livigno's unified ski pass lets you ski on both areas, so you can alternate your days depending on mood, weather or who you're travelling with — a couple of days on the calmer slopes of Carosello 3000, a couple on the livelier ones at Mottolino.
Why where you stay matters more than which side you choose
The real practical constraint isn't so much which ski area to pick, but where you sleep: staying at one end of town, reaching the opposite side takes time.
